Watoto has launched a second home to care for orphaned and vulnerable babies in Uganda. The ceremony took place on Monday, 22nd February 2010 and was attended by Mpigi Local Government administrators, media and the incredible volunteers from around the world who help to take care of the babies.

Gary Skinner, Watoto Founder said: “Baby Watoto Suubi is a generational investment that we are making today. It is more than feeding and clothing destitute children. We are raising the next generation of Africa’s leaders.”

As an addition to the existing babies’ home in downtown Kampala, the new facility, located at Watoto’s Suubi Children’s Village in Mpigi district, has the capacity to care for up to 150 infants at any given time.

The existing babies’ home is currently caring for 77 babies.

“I want to thank everyone – nannies, administrators, builders and our generous donors – who have contributed to the success story we see today. It is my prayer that we will continue to put our hands together to look after God’s children,” said Marilyn Skinner, Watoto Co-founder.

There are many vulnerable babies in Uganda who are abandoned or orphaned due to poverty, lack of education and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Many of these babies fail to make it to their 5th birthday because of the much-needed intense care and medical attention that their immediate relatives cannot provide.

Baby Watoto provides special care to destitute babies aged 0-2 years old, providing them with the best possible start in life. When they are older and physically well enough, they either graduate to a Watoto children's village or are reunited with existing relatives.
Uganda currently has an estimate of over 45 babies’ homes, serving desperate babies. Though infant mortality is steadily decreasing, adult motility is projected to sore with population increase, leaving many infants orphaned and vulnerable.

Watoto has plans to launch a third babies’ home in Gulu town in the second quarter of 2010. The home will serve the Northern Uganda region and its surrounds.
